Celebrating Emily Kain: Award-Winning Kitchen Design That Proves Flat-Pack Can Be Chic

At The Design Studio, we’re proud to share that Emily Kain, one of our talented designers, has recently won the Principal Kitchens Design of the Year Award 2024 for her outstanding kitchen design.

Emily's award-winning project demonstrates that flat-pack kitchens can be both stylish and functional, proving that creativity can elevate even the simplest materials.

Emily won first place in the Retail Value Under $7,500 Kitchen category and took home a $1,000 prize voucher. She specializes in home design and is known for creating detailed 2D and 3D scaled drawings, a skill that sets her apart in the industry.

What makes Emily's kitchen so unique? It’s all about how she transformed a flat-pack kitchen into a custom look. Designed for her own mid-century 1950s home in Nuriootpa, the kitchen features a combination of practical elements and elegant design. Emily carefully selected materials, such as a Tasmanian oak surround around the island bench, Caesarstone for the countertops, and two-pack painted MDF board for a textured finish on the island. These thoughtful choices helped her achieve a bespoke feel without the custom price tag.

“I wanted the kitchen to have the appearance of a custom design, but without the high costs typically associated with bespoke kitchens,” Emily explained. By blending affordable materials with her design expertise, Emily turned a standard flat-pack setup into a stylish, functional kitchen.

In addition to the design work, Emily and her husband relocated the kitchen to a completely new spot in their home, turning what was once their lounge room into a spacious cooking area. The result is a kitchen with ample counter space, large drawers, and an integrated dishwasher that seamlessly blends into the cabinetry.
